Poker Rules

With the concept of betting, Poker is just a game of chance. However it also requires quite a bit of skill and psychology. Poker is a card game where the player wagers on the strength of the cards which they hold. The game centers on a communal ‘pot’ which consists of the players’ wagers. The poker player who holds the highest ranking hand or makes a wager is awarded the ‘pot’. But the hand or wager must be unmatched by any of the opponents.

Poker is played with a regular pack of 52 cards. Though there are few variant games where multiple packs are used or a few cards called jokers are added. The cards are ranked in a descending order, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. There are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs); but no one is superior to the other. Each poker hand consists of five cards and the highest hand wins the game.

‘Table stakes’ is the basic poker play where the chips that are in play in the beginning of every hand can be used through out the hand. It has an application known as the ‘all-in rule’. Here if the player does not have enough chips to call a bet, he will not be forced to forfeit his hand. The player is declared an All-in and is entitled for the portion of the pot that corresponds to his final wager.

Every poker games commence with a forced wager with each poker player competing over it. It is a gambling game and you are required to ‘ante’ something to be eligible to deal with the cards. There is an ante, a bring in and two forced wagers in a Seven Card Stud. The forced wagers in a Texas Holdem and Omaha are a small and a big blind. The players are required to tactically wager employing the number of actions available to them in a basic poker game. The rules which govern their actions are:

CHECK – a player can ‘check’ if there is no wager left in the current betting round. This action of the act of checking passes on in a clockwise manner to the next poker player. With a ‘check’ the layer loses his right to bet in that game but does not lose his interest in the pot. After all the players check during a single round of betting, the round gets completed.

BET – when there is none left in the current betting round, a player can ‘bet’. After he bets the poker player who sits on his immediate left or even the other subsequent players can ‘fold’, ‘raise’ or ‘call’.

FOLD – when a player ‘folds’, he interest in the pot gets forfeited. He is then neither required nor allowed to further wage money into the current poker game.

CALL – a player can ‘call’ if there is a wager in the current round of the game. In order to call the player needs to match the current bet made by his opponent(s).

RAISE – a player can ‘raise’ if there is a wager in the current betting round. For this the player is required to call a higher bet than the current one. Then the subsequent players have to ‘raise’ and‘re-raise’ so that the interest in the pot is maintained.

Internet Poker

An Internet Poker room is an online card room. It is characterized by world-class poker software and services. Players are offered popular games like Texas Holdem, Omaha and Stud. There are numerous internet poker rooms and they are characterized by their signature Lobby and table themes, Images, Notes, Statistics, hand History, Sorting and filtering options, Table resizing and Window focus.

You begin by signing up at an online poker site then send the poker site some money, and press buttons that say check, bet, raise, and fold, as simple as that! But hey! Just keep an eye on some important aspects:

Do not forget the maxim, ‘Poker is more of a game of people than it is a game of cards’. You need to maintain an updated profile of your opponents. When you save these notes on your system it will help you to access your moves when you intend to square of an old opponent.
Internet poker sites also help you to maintain a few of your own accounts. Say, how many hands did you fold on the third street? Then, how tight should you be on the fifth blind? Your statistical data will be made available to you.

Internet poker players have the option of appearing as the intermittent blinking light and texting the fellow players. You also have the option selecting a personalized image representing you in a way you choose in the internet poker room. You can select your preferred language to communicate and receive mails. They can be anything from English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian or Japanese and several other languages are on its way to add on to the list.

The internet poker has the option of requesting poker hand histories. This can be for a specific poker game number or a full poker tournament and even your last 150 hands. So, you will not only see all the action during the hand but also the cards of those who did not fold during the hand.
Apart from this you can also sort and filter through the available games and tournaments.

Recently developed soft wares aids to multi-table and even protects you from multi-tabling mishaps through their advanced multi-table options. The displayed internet connection status of your fellow players helps you to play accordingly and not get messed up. Being a player in an internet poker site, you will have the opportunity to participate different Multi-table Internet Poker Tournaments.

A small word of advice - Players are advised to get finely experienced in playing practice hands before graduating to cyber-space. Playing directly with fake money will help you little to improve your skills. So, get used to the software first before jumping on the gun.

Types of Poker Games

The modern card game of Poker has different variations most of them being created in the United States in the mid 1900s. Though the standard order of play is followed, the details with respect to the hand values, the number of betting rounds, the exact cards that are being dealt with and the specific actions that are taken between rounds determine the poker variant. The most popular poker variants in the casinos and the poker rooms worldwide are:

DRAW POKER – In this variety the players deal with a complete hand which is hidden and continuously improve them through replacement. The most popular in this variety is the Five Card Draw.

STUD POKER – This game has multiple betting rounds. Here each player receives a combination of face-up and face-down cards. The popular varieties are the Seven-card stud and the Five-card stud.

COMMUNITY CARD POKER – Here each player has an incomplete hidden hand. They also hold shared face-up cards. The popular varieties are the Texas holdem and Omaha holdem.

Some specific poker variant games are :-

Stud Horse Poker
It is a combination of stud and community card game. There are many variations of this type depending on how many and what kind of cards are dealt in different rounds. Deciding on the betting order becomes an issue here. The game is usually played in High-low Splits.

High Chicago or Low Chicago
These are the two versions of the high stud game. In High Chicago the player who has the highest face-down receives half the pot. Conversely the player with the lowest face-down receives half the pot and if he manages to have both he attains the whole pot.

Follow the Queen
It is a seven card stud game. After the Queen has been dealt or exposed, the card which is immediately dealt face-up is designated as the ‘wild card’. The betting is similar to the regular 7-card stud games.

Billabong (and Shanghai)
This is a mixed stud/community card variety of Texas holdem. Billabong is a mixed version of ‘Manila’. Each player deals two down cards and a single up card. The high card starts the betting and the low up-card stars with a ‘bringin’. Shanghai is the same game with an extra ‘hole card’. When you discard a card immediately it is called ‘pineapple’, and when you discard just before showdown is called ‘Tahoe’.

Indian Poker
This game is a riot to play. There can be two to ten players. Each player holds up his card for every one to see. Then from the left of the dealer, betting begins. When the betting gets over, the winner takes the pot. The deal then rotates to the left for another deck. It in fact can drive you crazy if there is no limit to the pot.

Caribbean Poker

Caribbean poker is a casino table game. It has rules similar to the five-card stud poker and cannot be beaten in the long run. The uniqueness of the Caribbean stud is that it is played against the house instead of against other players. It is also free from any sort of deception or bluffing.

In this game each player places his ‘ante’ at the layout on the indicated points. Before the dealer announces ‘no more bets’ the entire ante wagers ought to be placed. The dealer and the players now receive five cards all face-down.

The essential rules of the Caribbean poker that must be followed at every game:

  • Each player can have only one hand. They are not allowed to hold or wage on multiple hands at the table
  • When a player chooses to play the Progressive Pay Out feature, he must insert the $1 wager into the slot and make sure that the indicator light is switched on.
  • Players are strictly forbidden from communicating and exchanging information based on their hands with other players or the dealer. If a player is found guilty of violation his game will be called a dead hand and he will be forfeited of all his wagers.
  • If a player is found to possess an incorrect number of cards his hand will be called a dead hand or push.
  • The table/casino supervisor’s decision is final
  • When a dealer has dealt four cards of the five card hand he shall also deal the additional card in order to complete the hand. Any further misdeal to the dealer will result in all the hands being called void and the cards going for a reshuffle.
  • Every player must hold his five cards in such a manner that it will always be on the full view of the dealer throughout the game. After the player has examined his cards and placed them face-down on the lay out, he will not be allowed to touch them again.
  • Player happens to expose the ‘hole card’ before the dealer announces ‘no more bets’, it will result in all the hands being called void.

The player plays with a single deck of 52 cards against the dealer. A player wins when he has a higher 5-card poker hand than the dealers.

  • When the player raises and the dealer doesn’t qualify.
  • The player shows a higher 5-card poker hand and eth dealer manages to have a minimum of an Ace/King.
  • The Progressive- the player places 41 in eth slot and receives a flush or higher.

There can be only five hands to qualify for the Progressive Jackpot:

  • Flush - any five cards of one suit.
  • Full House - 3 of a Kind with a Pair.
  • 4 of a Kind - any hand of four like cards.
  • Straight Flush - Five consecutive cards of the same suit in a row.
  • Royal Flush - 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of the same suit.

The player loses when:
He folds or the dealer qualifies with a higher 5-card poker hand.

Position

When playing Poker you come across the term “position”, this refers to your place around the Poker table in relation to the dealer. Someone who “has position” on you is someone who will act (bet, fold etc…) after you, therefore they have the advantage of seeing what action you have taken before making their own decision on what to do. Of course you also have position on the person to your right. The person with the best position is the dealer as they get to see everyone’s plays before committing to their own (this is why the dealer button is passed to the next player after a game is complete).

Positions in Poker are split into 3 categories, these are:

  • Early Position
  • Middle Position
  • Late Position

Early Position
You are said to be in an Early Position if you are with in the 3 seats to the left of the dealer. This is generally considered the worst position to be in at a Poker table as you are required to act more or less first before anyone else and therefore don’t have the foresight of other peoples actions. When you are in this position it is often best to play only the best hands here, if you are deal weak cards, fold.

Middle Position
Middle Position is generally the 3 seats after Early Position. Your better off in a Middle Position than in the Early Position as you have the advantage to see how the players in Early Position have acted, however don’t forget that there are still players who are going to be acting after you! You are usually able to play a little loser when in Middle Position than Early Position but some caution is necessary still.

Late Position
Late Position is usually the dealer and the 2 players directly to the right of the dealer. This is the best position to be in at the Poker Table as you get to make decisions on what to do using all the information from the players actions before you. Sometimes, if no one has bet in a round, the players in late position may win the pot simply by betting any amount - this is called “betting position.” A lot of Poker players know about betting position and may call a bet as a bluff when the dealer or one before him bets, but it works often enough that it’s worth trying once in a while.

Bluffing

What separates Poker from other card games is that its not all about luck, its about skill. One’s skill is measured in their ability to bluff, to fool other into thinking they are holding a better hand than what they really have.

There is a art to bluffing, holding ones nerve and not giving anything away that you don’t want to, but giving certain things away when the time is just right, fooling your opponent into thinking the wrong thing.

To bluff you are placing a bet, putting up your own money on a hand which you know is inferior to other. Bluffing is an important part to any Poker players game and being a good bluffer with help you win more pots. Bluffing is a balance of when to bluff and when to simply fold your hand, bluff too much and you will get caught out and once your opponents know when you are bluffing, your Poker arsenal has been depleted and you are simply playing a game of luck, so its time to stop playing.

There are two basic kinds of bluff these are:

Pure bluff - When a player makes a pure bluff, he bets or raises with a bad hand that has little to no chance of improving. For example, if in five-card draw, a player has nothing but a king-high and raises, hoping everyone will fold.

Semi-bluff - When a player bets on a hand that is probably not the best hand at the moment, but has a chance of improving later in the hand, it is called a semi-bluff. For example, if a player has 4 cards to a straight or flush in Texas Hold’em on the flop and bets, that’s a semi-bluff.
There are certain times when you should bluff, and there are times when you really shouldn’t;

The Best Times to Bluff are when you can meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • You are in late position and no one before you is representing a strong hand
  • The board cards or cards you have showing make it possible for you to represent a strong hand
  • You have a table image of a rock
  • You have read other players’ tells and sense they are weak and will fold to a bet or raise
  • You are facing only one opponent

The Worst Times to Bluff are:

  • When you know a player still in the hand is the kind who never folds
  • When a player has so much money in the pot that your raise or bet will not be enough to force him to fold
  • There are still many players in the hand

10 Minute Guide to Learning How To Play Texas Hold’em Poker

How to play:

  • Before any cards are dealt the 2 players to the left of the dealer need to get the action started by putting in blind bets. The player next to the dealer bets the small blind, the player next to him bets the big blind. (whats a blind?)
  • Each player is dealt 2 cards which no one else sees. These cards are called pocket or hole cards. (Best and worst Poker pocket cards)
  • The game starts with the first player to the left of the big blind. The will either bet, raise or fold depending on how good they feel their hand is. The movement of play continues clockwise around the table.
  • Once the first round of betting is complete, 3 cards are dealt, face up in the centre of the table. These cards are called community cards and all players can use these cards to make up the best 5 card hand. The first 3 community cards that are dealt are called community cards.
  • Once the flop is deals everyone will have a better idea of how strong their hand is, and another round of betting starts. This starts with the player directly to the left of the dealer. This player can either check or bet.
  • Once this round of betting is complete another commuinity card is dealt, this is called the turn (or fourth street)
  • Next another round of betting takes place (well this is gabeling after all!)
  • After this betting is complete a 5th community card is dealt, this is called the river (or fifth street)
  • A final round of betting takes place, again starting with the player directly to the left of the dealer.
  • Once this betting is complete all remaining players show their cards and the player who makes the best 5 card hand combining their pocket cards and community cards wins the pot. Sometimes the 5 community cards actually make up the best 5 card hand and beat all player and their pocket cards, if this happens the pot is divided equally between all players still in the hand.

What you will need:

  • 52-Card Deck
  • Chips
  • 2-20 Players
  • A dealer button
